Music videos in the 80s were becoming increasingly filled with showgirls, attractive singers who sometimes had more looks than musical talent, impossibly teased hair, and the first timid attempts at sexual transgression. A glimpse of a thigh, an almost skin-tight dress, a close-up of sensual lips — that was often enough to send an entire generation into a frenzy. After all, until then, even something as innocent as Patsy Kensit's navel could become an object of fascination.

And then Samantha Fox arrived. She appeared on screen completely unashamed of her body and sexuality, bouncing around with her famously generous breasts while singing "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" in a deliberately provocative, almost orgasmic voice. Compared with the coy sensuality audiences had been used to, Samantha Fox didn't exactly believe in subtlety.

From that moment on, nothing would ever be the same again.

Unlike many female pop stars who merely hinted at sexuality, Samantha arrived with an established adult image and wasn't afraid to exploit it.

Now there was someone whose message seemed refreshingly direct: "I want your body." Forget romantic kisses, coy glances and endless courtship. Samantha Fox made sexual desire part of the performance itself — and the title of her biggest hit couldn't have made that message much clearer.

For several years she was everywhere: in the charts, on television, in magazines and in music videos, attracting huge crowds wherever she appeared. What is sometimes forgotten today, however, is that Samantha Fox was not a porn actress. Her early fame came from glamour and topless modelling, particularly Page 3, before she successfully reinvented herself as a pop singer. Her provocative public image blurred those boundaries in the minds of many people, which only strengthened the rebellious, sexually liberated persona that helped turn Samantha Fox into one of the most recognisable sex symbols of the 80s.
